href="http://www.pinvoke.com/">Fugue is a free icon set created by Yusuke Kamiyamane–free for personal and commercial projects.

Let’s look at Fugue and how you can quickly add icons from the set to your site via the Fugue CSS Sprite Framework.

Fugue – A Huge Icon Set

This icon set currently has over 2000 16×16 pixel icons (in PNG format and PSD) and more are constantly being added. With this many icons, there’s usually at least 1 or 2 suitable icons for whatever you’re wanting to represent. Each icon is available with or without a shadow.

This set would be great for any web app–it contains many interface and UI icons among others. For example, I used Fugue for my OpenX Admin Icon Set v2.0.

Customize Fugue Icons With the Devkit

Yusuke has also graciously included Photoshop files (PSD’s) for every icon in the set; letting you tweak and combine icons if what’s there is not exactly what you want.

License

Fugue is available under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license.

If you prefer not to provide attribution (or can’t), you can also buy a royalty-free license for $49.

Fugue Sprite CSS Framework

If you’re planning on using several icons from Fugue on your website, you might consider using Fugue Sprite CSS from Alison at AlisoTheGeek.com.

The Fugue Sprite CSS framework works on the same principle as any other CSS sprite technique–only easier and faster. Way easier, because you don’t have to do anything by hand.

How To Use It

To use it, just place the single sprite image in the same directory as the Sprite CSS file. To display an icon, use the icon key that’s provided, find the name of the icon, and use that name as the class for your styled element.

Example: You want to display the leaf icon. Find the leaf icon in the list of icons in the key and copy the name of it (fugue-leaf). Include it in your CSS by adding a ‘.‘ in front of the icon name (.fugue-leaf). Fugue Sprite CSS takes care of the rest.

Considerations

Since the sprite framework contains all the icons from the Fugue set, the framework’s a bit large (684 KB total). But if you’re planning on using quite a few icons from the Fugue set, it’d be worth it.

Give Fugue a Try

Give Fugue a try if you haven’t.

If you’ve downloaded it in the past, chances are there are tons more icons added since.

And if you like the set, consider buying the royalty-free license.

What Type of Icon Set Do You Want?

graphic design

web design

icons

OpenX site to learn more.

With the new version of OpenX, I’m releasing an update to our free icon set (version 2.0) for the OpenX 2.8 admin.

221 Reworked Admin Icons

The release of OpenX 2.8, which brings a lot of performance, functionality and visual changes also includes a lot of new icons and images in the admin section.

Since I was going to add new icons to the set anyway to make it compatible with OpenX 2.8, I decided to rework the entire set. This version moves away from the Silk-based icons used in v1.0 to icons based on the Fugue icon set.

That ended up being 221 newly reworked icons for this set.

What Does This Icon Set Do?

The EsDev OpenX Admin Icon Set (EDOA) is a drop-in replacement for about 98% the images and icons used in the default OpenX 2.8 admin section.

It basically helps the admin section look more professional, and the icons match the rest of the user interface better than do the default icons.

Who Is This Icon Set For?

The EDOA icon set is for anyone running a self-hosted (as opposed to the hosted version on OpenX.org) version of OpenX; version 2.8 and above.

How Do I Use This Icon Set?

To install the new admin icons:

Make a backup of your OpenX images folder (and sub folders) located at: [openx-directory]/www/admin/assets/images/

Extract the EsDev-OpenX-Admin-Pro-Icons-v2.0 ZIP to your harddrive

Copy the images folder (and sub folders) to [openx-directory]/www/admin/assets/images/ — thus replacing the entire images directory (and sub directories)

Clear your browser cache and log into the OpenX admin to see the new icons in use

great free icon sets for web and graphic designers. But sometimes you’re just needing one or 2 icons to spiffy up your design and you’re looking for something specific. If you’re anything like me, you’ve got a collection of icons and icon sets, but no good way to search them.

There are a couple icon search engines out there that can help you in your search.

IconFinder

IconFinder has been around for a while and has a large array of icon sets that it searches through. You can search icons by keyword, icon size, or use a tag cloud to find icons.

You can also view the license information and other details of individual icons right from the search results window, without having to go to another page.

With IconFinder, you can also test how the icon will look on a dark background by toggling the background color. This is helpful for checking contrast and alpha transparencies before downloading.

IconFinder’s icon search also can be added to Firefox’s search bar, allowing you to search the IconFinder site without going to their site first.

ICONlook.com

ICONlook.com is a newer icon search engine than IconFinder, but very promising in that it has pretty much all the features IconFinder has.

By default, your search will include all sizes from 12×12 to 128×128 but, like IconFinder, you can filter out the results to find icons of a certain size. I find ICONlook’s way of displaying the sizes easier to use because all the sizes are on display right under the search box (IconFinder’s you have to click a small text link to choose).

With ICONlook you can view the license info, but you have to click the icon and go to another page to see it, which makes it a little less convenient.

When clicking on an icon of a certain size, the page that contains the details about the icon also displays the icon in all of its available sizes-and each icon is labeled so you know its size. This is a very handy feature that I wish IconFinder had.

ICONlook.com doesn’t have a search that can be added to your search bar, but this may not really be too big of a deal to you.

Both search engines have a nice selection of icons that are indexed, but ICONlook has a much bigger selection of icons to search from.

Where do you look for icons?

12 + Mega Icon Sets For Designers

freebies

graphic design

web design

icons
<guid

I collect them like they’re going out of style, and when I find a new set, I almost immediately download it with gleeful anticipation.

Hello, my name is Shawn and I’m an iconoholic.

But addictions aside, having a great arsenal of icons at your beck and call can be a lifesaver for web and graphics projects.

Thankfully, there are several excellent free icons sets available. Here are some of my favorites—in no particular order.

Note: This is by no means a complete list of the free icons out there. This is merely a list of some of the icon sets that have a wide range of icons that would be useful to most web and graphic designers.

Fugue

Everyone probably already knows about Silk from FamFam, since you can find them nearly everywhere. However, if you’re looking for the same type of 16 x 16 pixel goodness, it’s worth looking at Fugue from pinvoke.

Fugue’s latest update brings the number of icons up to 971 16 x 16 pixel icons in PNG format. The look of these icons will go with most any type of design.

Also, from pinvoke is Diagona, which is tailored a bit more toward the UI side of icons (with arrows, checks, bullets, etc), has 400 icons (200 10 x 10 pixel icons + 200 16 x 16 pixel icons).

License

Both Fugue and Diagona are free for personal and commercial use under a Creative Commons 3.0 license.

Tango icon theme. You’ve probably seen icons from this set used in many places—even if you didn’t realize it was from Linux.

This is a huge collection of icons (hundreds?) for the Linux OS, including icons for applications, actions, devices, symbols, emotes, mime types and more. Icons come in vector format (SVG) and PNG format in sizes from 16 to 32 pixels.

The really impressive part of the Tango project is that many people are contributing to it so there are even more icons available on Tango’s site and other places that match Tango’s visual style.

License

Tango is released under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 license.

Oxygen is linked to Linux. It’s an icon set/theme that works with the KDE desktop.

Oxygen is a ginormous icon set, containing well over 1,000 PNG icons in sizes from 16 pixels to 128 pixels (that’s over 1,000 in 16 pixels, 1,000 in 22 pixels, etc), plus vector versions (SVG).

License

Oxygen is released under both a Creative Common Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License and a <a
